VIA Rail The Skeena departs three times a week year round from either Jasper in the heart of Jasper National Park or Prince Rupert on the north Pacific Coast. See Mount Robson the highest peak in the Rockies, Waterfalls, rivers, lakes and great stretches of wilderness, home to bear, moose, elk, deer, wolf and eagles, Totem poles and traces of pioneer history the Coastal Mountains and the mighty Skeena or 'river of mists'. The train services small communities which rely on it for it’s link with the ’outside world’, places like Dorreen with a year round population of one!

Why buy this

The Skeena is a land cruise through Yellowhead Pass, across British Columbia’s interior plateau and down the Skeena river valley to the Pacific Coast, offering views of stunning and varied landscapes that simply cannot be seen any other way.

This is probably the most scenic rail journey in the whole of Canada and if you have to choose one journey then do this one! Animals including bears are commonly seen from the train- and often the train driver will slow the train so that you can take a snapshot.

This region is one of North America’s last great wildernesses and is dotted with tantalizing reminders of its rich First Nation history and the spirit of the explorer. Once in Prince Rupert why not use this as a jumping off point to visit the Queen Charlotte Islands - the traditional home of the Haida nation and learn something of Canada’s aboriginal history, or catch a ferry north to Alaska or south to Vancouver Island.

How it works

You will be issued with a voucher, which must be exchanged at the departure station for your actual ticket. Before boarding the train you must take your voucher and passport to the VIA Rail ticket office where they will issue you the ticket for your journey. Please arrive at the station at least 1 hour prior to the departure of the train. VIA Rail only sell the same number of tickets as there are seats on board. If you do not have a reservation you will not be allowed to board unless there is space available - standing is not an option.

Cancellations and refunds

Vouchers which are lost, stolen or validated/exchanged cannot be refunded. Refunds are only accepted on vouchers returned to International Rail before the start of their validity. Vouchers returned for cancellation or alterations have a standard 15% cancellation/exchange fee in addition to an administrative charge per ticket. Cancellation/alteration fees will be charged on each voucher returned. Duplicate or replacement vouchers cannot be issued under any circumstances.
