After years of civil war Mozambique has emerged as one of the poorest countries in Africa and has left a high price to be paid by its people. You will be helping to give the care and attention needed to the many orphaned children who have been affected by years of strife.Call: 0845 344 7592
The city of Inhambane, a historical town full of colonial architecture, lies 470kms northeast of Maputo in the Southern Mozambique. The orphanage aims to provide orphans and vulnerable children in the area a safe place to live while providing them with a basic education, food and the care, attention and guidance that they need as they are growing up. The children at the orphanage have either been abandoned, are vulnerable or have no parents and without the help, support and care from the orphanage would have a very bleak future. The orphanage aims to give a sense of real family to the children and is made up of quasi units – family units of about 10 children each unit with a house mother or guardian to look after them. The orphanage caters for around 150 children and also has a primary school attached which is also attended by children from the wider community. The staff at the project are dedicated in providing the children with the attention and care that they need but unfortunately there are always insufficient hands to go around, you will be helping to alleviate this pressure and providing the children with the attention that they need. The children are between 1 and 9 years of age so you will be getting involved in various activities and general care not to mention education but also bringing a lot of fun into their lives as well! You may be allocated to one particular family unit or may be moved to various units daily but you will be helping the guardians, social workers, teachers and various staff to look after the children in a general day to day role. You will be helping the staff get the younger children ready by bathing them, preparing food, arranging fun activities and games, teaching basic life skills, teaching simple English and maths, day to day cleaning chores and also administration of the centre to mention a few!
You will be staying in a volunteer house about a 30 minute taxi or ‘chappa’ journey from the project, located 5 minutes from the beach near the village of Tofo. The centre of Tofo is 200m away where you will find a market, some basic shops, a few restaurants and a few bars plus plenty of beach activities! You will have plenty of well deserved time to chill on the beach after a rewarding day with the children!
