Our Conservation and Caring volunteers in Japan work in our host live-in school dedicated to the care of mentally disabled Japanese adults. The school has a strong belief in the importance of providing meaningful employment for residents, and this is used as a means to promoting a sense of self-worth. Students spend most of their time carrying out agricultural work, which includes growing shiitake mushrooms along with grapes for the nearby winery. Your duties will therefore be two-fold: you will look after students' needs whilst taking part in agricultural activities with them. You will help in a variety of ways, including cultivating the grape vines, growing shiitake mushrooms, accompanying students on medical check-ups and helping in the rehabilitation of physically disabled students. These placements are perfect for volunteers looking to make a meaningful difference to the lives of people with special needs while gaining experience in environmental and agricultural work.
