Overview

There are over 5000 brown bears in Romania. Sadly, some of them are living appalling lives, abused and paraded as tourist attractions. They are forced to live in tiny cages, tied to chains and even drugged to make them look docile. Most were captured as young cubs. It’s the only life they know.

BUT there is hope for them. In 2006 Europe’s first bear sanctuary was opened close to Brasov in Romania. Its aim is to nurse the bears back to health and release them into the centre’s large enclosure where they can integrate back into their natural habitat. Some will make it back to the wild. Those who can’t will always have a safe home.

You can be a part of this rehabilitation process, completely changing the course of a bear’s life!

Our placements at the bear sanctuary last from 1 week to 3 months so that even the busiest bear enthusiast can have a chance to work with these special animals.

Oyster WorldwideYour help is needed to keep the centre going - it relies on Oyster Worldwides volunteers. You will get stuck into every aspect of the bears’ care; from preparing their food and feeding them, to observing their progress in the wild and helping in the vet centre. You could also get involved with the sanctuary’s education centre, improving public awareness about these bears and their needs.

You will be volunteering with a great team of Romanian workers who love the bears as much as you do. You will get to know your workmates well by travelling the 25 minutes to work with them each morning in the sanctuary’s own transport. This is an excellent chance to learn more about the local culture as well as practising your Romanian language skills!

The opportunity of working with these beautiful creatures is open to anyone who enjoys being out of doors, has moderate fitness and most importantly loves bears and is passionate about giving them a better life.

Where will I live?

Oyster WorldwideYou will be living with your fellow volunteers in a comfortable rented flat in central Brasov (one of the largest and most lively cities in Romania). On the weekends and evenings you can explore the city and relax. Brasov is surrounded on three sides by the Transylvanian hills and has everything that you would want from a city: restaurants, bars, clubs, shops and cinemas.

If you choose to come on a shorter placement you will be staying in a central hotel or self-catered apartment.

How can I spend my free time?

You are lucky in this placement to be able to enjoy the lush green Romanian countryside at work but return to the buzz and attractions of Brasov in the evening. Brasov has a lovely square, fine historical buildings and lively nightlife. Nearby there are great attractions to visit; Romania’s best ski slopes are just 7km from Brasov and there is another ski resort slightly further away. Whilst you are within the Transylvanian region it would be a crime to miss out on seeing Dracula’s very own Castle and learn more about his legend.

You are also surrounded by stunning scenery which is perfect for going on walks and treks around the area. Our volunteers have really enjoyed exploring this relatively unknown part of Europe.
