Lattitude placements suit individuals with a can-do attitude who are willing to make the most of their placement and above all enjoy it. It will also help if you are sensitive to the predicament of under privileged children, have an interest in issues of poverty and inequality and the rich biodiversity and wildlife of Tanzania.

Cost includes orientation and Swahili lessons in Tanzania, but excludes Teaching School Course in the UK (£168), transportation within country, volunteer visa application in Tanzania (US$140)

For applicants from the UK, we have a number of bursary schemes available for volunteers from a variety of backgrounds.

Our bursary scheme and funded placement projects reduce the barrier of cost for young people experiencing financial problems. They are designed to help young people who would not otherwise be able to afford to go.

Lattitude placements are in a center caring for mentally and physically disabled children, providing them with primary health care, basic education, food and recreational services. This center also undertakes community-based rehabilitation for mentally disabled children, promote of disability, HIV/AIDS and malaria awareness and support the elderly. This organization is under the auspices of the Diocese and very active Christian organization. Volunteers must be sensitive to this and active participation in the Christina ethos is welcome.

In the morning volunteers help with 20 or 30 disables children who are brought to the center everyday. In the afternoon volunteers teach basic English to a class of about 25 street children and/or help with administration. Also, some days the volunteer teaches conversational English to the other young adults who work at the Center.

There is a varied Outreach Programme in which volunteers are expected to participate. Some of the activities are: visiting the homes of disabled students to help with rehabilitation; weeding and preparing the land of the farm(s) associated with the Centre; accompanying the Social Worker on her calls; helping with a homework class for town children; visiting a local orphanage; helping with food distribution; making handicrafts that the Centre can sell to visitors to raise money. You will cycle to some of these venues. An African dance troop practices three times a week at the centre and you are welcome to participate.

This is a tough but a very deeply rewarding placement. Very little formal activity is organized. There are no supplies for the teaching other than a blackboard and chalk. You will need to be imaginative, show initiative, flexible, organized and more than all self-motivated, to get the most out of this fascinating Placement. Volunteers who have undertaken voluntary work at this placement have gone on to retain links with the center and fundraise for its activities.

Tanzania is among the top ten countries in the world rich in biodiversity and it is a leading country in wildlife conservation in Africa. Tanzania has a number of important endangered animal species in the world such as Black Rhino, Wild Dog, Chimpanzee, Elephant and Crocodile (Slender Snorted Crocodile). During holidays or after the end of your placement you will have the opportunity to learn about all what Tanzania has to offer.
