The Fastnet Race is one of the world's great offshore events. Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) the 608 mile event starts from the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes and finishes at the Royal Western Yacht Club in Plymouth.
The demanding and complex course takes you past the Needles and out into the English Channel. It follows the headlands of England's south coast - Anvil Point, Portland Bill, Start Point, The Lizard and Lands End - then leads you into the open ocean and around the lighthouse of the fabled Fastnet Rock.
The return leg to Plymouth is via Bishop Rock Lighthouse on the south side of the Scilly Isles. RORC regulations stipulate that the crew must complete 300 nautical miles of offshore racing before the date of the Fastnet Race.
The Flying Fish campaign includes the qualifying offshore races. At least half the crew must have undertaken ISAF-approved safety training but, as we believe that the whole team should be fully trained, we include the RYA/ISAF Offshore Racing Crew course for all crew members.
The Fastnet attracts just about every sailing country in the world and an equal mix of amateurs and professionals. All have come to savour the thrill of the challenge in one of the most demanding sporting events on the sailing calendar.
The Flying Fish Fastnet Campaign gives you the opportunity to become part of an expert race crew and to compete in one of the world's most exciting ocean races.
The great thing about racing is that you never stop learning. Whether you're a relative beginner to offshore racing or joining us with heaps of experience, our professional race training programme will improve your skills. You learn more about race crew roles, spinnaker packing, hoisting, trimming, peeling, gybing, dropping and broach recovery. You will practise ‘bear away sets’, gybe sets and letter box drops, to name but a few techniques. And don't forget, you also need to perfect these skills at night.
Off the water, we have an in-depth look at the rules, tactics and strategy on the race course. The race finishes in Plymouth and transport back to the Solent is provided.
