You'll have the opportunity to shadow the doctors in various departments in the hospital. The experience you gain will be invaluable to you in the future and totally different to what you're used to in your home country.

‘The hospital where you'll work is situated in a great location in Negombo. It's a wonderful modern building surrounded by typical Colonial Sri Lankan style houses, and the streets are lined with trees. The town is very picturesque and brimming with atmosphere.

A well-equipped laboratory

An X-ray unit with an experienced Radiographer

General Inpatient Wards

There is a General Practitioner holding surgery daily. The hospital also has visiting specialists in the following fields:

Orthopaedics

Whether your main interest is clinical or non-clinical sciences this hospital can offer you the experience you need. If you have not specialised yet, you will be able to gain an all-round experience of medicine, working in different departments and seeing the inner workings of a hospital. If you have specialised, or have a particular interest area, please inform us and we can tailor make your placement so that you receive relevant, specialist experience.

You will work closely with the owner of the hospital, Doctor K. Sri Ranjan. He holds surgery twice a day (morning and afternoon) for all sorts of illnesses and ailments and you are welcome to attend these. He is very friendly and very learned. He has a wealth of knowledge, and is genuinely interested in helping you to learn and further your future career.

In Sri Lanka there are specialist hospitals for Oncology, Leprosy and TB. If your interest lies in these fields, we are able to arrange for you to visit these hospitals. This may form part of your placement, or be the basis of your internship, dependent on your interests and study requirements. Please contact us for further details of this.

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:

 - An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into South East Asia and the Sri Lankan culture.

 - New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.

 - An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market

 - And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!

LOCATION:
Negombo has a great vibe about it: from the intense aroma of fish from the local market, to the sound of cawing crows and the sight of ladies taking rest in the shade along with the sleeping dogs. Negombo is a popular tourist resort and is the closest beach to Sri Lanka’s international airport. This fishing village was very lucky and avoided the impact of last years tsunami with just a few hotels being damaged but no fatalities suffered.

The beach is beautiful with long stretches of orange sand, palm trees and some beach front hotels. A little further back and there are many boutiques selling Sri Lankan handicrafts, markets and the general hustle and bustle of Sri Lanka.

WORK CONTENT:
You can work in a variety of medical departments, where you can either assist or shadow the staff members. The type of work you will be allocated will depend on your interests, but also on the extent of your own knowledge and ability. You will be able to examine patients and assist the doctors and nurses, but you will not be allowed to treat the patients. This is understandable given that you will be dealing with patient health and safety.

You will be involved in the day-to-day running of hospitals and clinics, observing or directly assisting the doctors and nursing. You can help out in simple but practical ways, vastly increasing your own knowledge and understanding of medical practice. You will get a good general feel of the Centre by working and/or observing in most departments and you will be exposed to hands-on nursing work.

If you plan on specialising in a particular field of medicine, we can arrange to place you in a relevant department, to ensure that you receive maximum experience in your chosen field.

ACCOMMODATION AND LIVING IN SRI LANKA:
We cannot BEGIN to tell you how beautiful this paradise island is! Nor how cheap to live and get around.  It is almost too good to be true! But it is true.  And there are so many fascinating places to visit.  The tea plantations are a must, the lace making, monuments and architectural splendours,  etc., but the most appealing is the Elephant Orphanage at Pinnawala.

Accommodation:
Travellers has a traditional Sri Lankan house in Ja-Ela. It is spacious and comfortable, with a garden, several balconies, two lounge rooms and many bedrooms. You will most likely share a room with other Travellers volunteers. There is a TV and DVD player for evening entertainment, in the upstairs lounge area and with the latest DVD copies just a pound to buy locally, there is usually something to watch! There is a local live-in chef at the Travellers house who will prepare your breakfast, lunch and dinner each day, throughout the week. We also have other staff at the house 24 hours a day for cleaning, assistance, security and comfort!
