The word Nholwasi means ‘to build and work together’, and this project provides the opportunity to do just that - working with local children, you can help to enrich their environment, and in turn their lives. It is a truly moving and possibly even life changing experience.
For some children growing up in southern Africa, life can be tough. Many young children loose their parents to AIDS and related diseases, and are often left with no one to look after them. These children often stay in their family home, rather than be separated from their siblings and sent to an orphanage, and are cared for by members of their community, who have been trained through a separate programme to provide them with the support that they need.
However, although they have people who care for them, the homes that the children are living in can be little more than shelters, with bare walls and no windows. This is where you and ACE step in. Working with the children to improve their surroundings, by painting bare walls and installing windows into their homes, you can help to improve their quality of life.
There are 40 homes within the orphan settlement in which this project runs that have been identified as needing improvement. So far, ACE students have renovated five of them – which means there are 35 still to go. You don’t need to be an experienced DIY expert to help, all we need is your time and enthusiasm.
Just two weeks of your time is all it takes to turn a shelter into a safe and clean home for a child.
ACE students also have an important part to play in running the garden at a local school, which enables the children to grow food such as spinach, carrots and onions, which they then sell on to the community to raise funds for the school. While on the Nholwasi Community Project you will stay in a nearby game reserve, containing species such as giraffe, buffalo and the occasional leopard.
