Do you fancy teaching little ones who could really use your time, energy and affection? Throughout Brazil, in a beautiful beach town of Florianópolis and within inner city areas of Rio de Janeiro, there are many 3-6 year old girls and boys with magnificent spirit and from very poor families, waiting for volunteers to share their joy with! One particular crèche that we work with desperately needs voluntary assistance because they are in danger of being shut down by the Government due to a lack of funds to pay for essential building repair work.
We have a variety of crèche placements in both Rio and Florianópolis, and you'll be allocated to one or more placements. Generally due to the age and number of children per class you may be asked to assist the class’s regular teacher, with conversational English and general classroom activities, however for other schools you may be in charge and expected to lead the class. You will be staying in a dorm room in a brand new hostel which has been set up by an artist with a wish to create a hostel that is different to anything else in Rio. Set in a beautiful redeveloped building from the end of the 19th century, you will be surrounded by wonderful Brazilian art, dipping you straight into the culture from the first minute you arrive! With over 110 beds, some decorated with an “art” theme you will be sure to meet like-minded travellers, other volunteers and artists from all over the world! The hostel currently has internet and WiFi, a common area, TV room, library, book exchange, safes, a terrace area for socializing, and a housekeeping service. It also has a bike rental service. They often have popular music from Brazil with live music on occasion and a fantastically vibrant, friendly atmosphere.

“One special experience I had was with one little girl who kept herself to herself, did not speak or play with the other children. She had a bad rash and sores all over her body. She was scratching all the time. I bought her some lotions and creams to help her and she got better and better. I spent more time with her and she started talking. I got her and the other children to interact and play games together. Soon she was just one of the group and fitted in with the rest. I will never forget her and she made the experience so special for me. I really would recommend anyone to take time to be a volunteer with Travellers.”
