You’ll be placed at one of a number of orphanages across Ho Chi Minh, depending on where your help is most needed at the time. The orphanages are home to anything from 50 to 500 children of various sages from 1 to 18, with the older children attending school during the day, so you’ll always be busy!
You role as a volunteer will be to provide children with the individual care and attention that local staff are too busy to give! You will also be working with children who are mentally and physically impaired, helping them to learn skills that will give them a better future and improving their confidence.
Your working hours at the project will be in shifts in the mornings, afternoons or a mixture of both between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, with a welcome 2 hour lunch break. Your weekends will be free to take in the sights of Ho Chi Minh City. If you’ve got a special skill or interest you’d like to introduce to the children, or if you’d like to give any additional time to the project then it will be very welcome! Your activities will be varied and could include any or all of the following:
• Teaching English
• Outdoor activities
• Arts and crafts
• Sport and games
• Songs and dance
• Social education and life skills
• Help with disabled children
• Domestic duties to ensure the smooth running of the orphanage
• Helping at meal and nap times
• Helping staff members improve their English and IT skills
• Fundraising for the orphanage
• Improving the appearance of the orphanage
