Community placements in South Africa are based in Outdoor Education camps that welcome children from disadvantaged backgrounds at certain times of the year. In July and December these camps run Under Privileged Camps (UPCs) free of charge for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, such as street children, AIDS orphans and abuse sufferers. Although your role will predominantly focus on leading outdoor activities such as hiking, rafting and abseiling, extra care will have to be taken to look after the specific needs of these young people. All applicants are matched to placements to ensure that there is a good fit between the volunteer and their host communities. Duties are very varied and you would have the opportunity to bring your own interests working with the children, especially when playing and entertaining the residents. Other duties will include helping with maintenance, school work and other small jobs.
