Located on the stunning Muizenburg beach near Cape Town this project was founded by a Big Wave Champion who wanted to find a way of enlightening the lives of children from disadvantaged backgrounds who could only see their future as a life of drugs and alcohol, to them there was no chance of having a good education or any other way of life. How wrong could they be! This project has taken children off the streets of the area and has given them the opportunity to take part in a sport that is usually only accessible to those who can afford it, showing them that there is an opportunity for a more positive way of life away from drugs and alcohol. The children come to the school in the afternoons to be taught how to surf and are also given a hot meal, probably the only one of the day that they can hope to receive. You will take part on the project from the morning when you will learn to surf and then you can pass on your new found skills to the children in the afternoon. No worries if you haven’t surfed previously as all coaching will be given! You will not only be teaching the children to surf but will be helping to prepare the surfboards and equipment ready for the children`s lessons and helping with food preparation not to mention clearing the equipment up afterwards. As many of the children have not travelled outside of Cape Town let alone their country your role as an international volunteer will have a positive impact giving the children ideas and views outside of their community.
During your free time you can watch the champion surfers show you how it is really done and just experience the white sands of this beautiful beach. You will be living in a volunteer house in Fishhoek which is located about 45 minutes from the project where you will have other volunteers to spend your time with and experience what Cape Town has to offer!
What the project says;
We aim to provide an outlet to crime, an opportunity for self-development, a transparent, accessible and representative surfing culture in South Africa and give back to our communities
Aoibhe Devlin says of the project – ‘ Rewarding, hilarious, meeting unbelievable people and making the children's days’
