Schools Assistant placements are located throughout Australia in some of the country’s most welcoming and exciting schools. You will have the chance to work alongside teachers, develop your own teaching skills and build strong relationships with the children as you assist with all aspects of school life. School Assistant placements offer the chance for volunteers to live and work with young people from a variety of backgrounds. In indigenous communities it may be the first time that the children have attended formal education. Volunteers assist with the supervision of students in the boarding house before and after school and at weekends, as well as providing assistance in the classroom with one-on-one tutoring and group work. This is particularly important for students with low levels of grammar and literacy. Help is also required in intensive English programmes for children who do not have English as their native language. All applicants are matched to placements to ensure that there is a good fit between the volunteer and their host school. In Fiji you will work as a full-time teacher and draw upon your own educational background. These challenging placements will suit academically confident, hardworking and responsible people. You will discover if teaching is for you while truly immersing yourself within the rich culture. Placements in Fiji offer the chance of real grass-roots volunteering, volunteers must be willing to forgo most luxuries, even running water and electricity, and be prepared to truly integrate into island life. Teaching placements are in primary and secondary schools, which are basic and have limited resources. Volunteers teach a range of subjects such as English, maths, science, geography and history. Additional duties may include general boarding supervision and assistance with extracurricular activities such as sport (soccer, rugby, volleyball and basketball), music and drama. Volunteers work full school days and have some occasional evening boarding work. All applicants are matched to placements to ensure that there is a good fit between the volunteer and their host communities. Come and enjoy working alongside a community, helping them to develop their own project, a preschool that caters for the orphaned and vulnerable of that community and a skills development centre to empower their caregivers. Teach the children, work with the caregivers, help us build mushroom projects and dig veggie gardens. Become a part of a vibrant community and learn how they live on the smell of an oil rag but live a full life. We also offer you the option of extending your stay and moving to our partner, Imire, where you can enjoy time on a conservation project working with rhinos and elephants at a professional, world class site.
