Coach Football to Children in Tamil Nadu
from £845 GBP
to £1895 GBP
Coaching Football in South India is a rewarding experience both for you and the children. Kids in India are wonderful to teach and incredibly enthusiastic about learning sport. They turn up for training each day eager to learn new skills and play a game. Coaching has immeasurable indirect benefits for the children, such as health awareness, increased confidence and social skills.
Travellers work with different types of schools all based in the delightful and bustling city of Madurai in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Most of the schools are privately run as they tend to be larger and have playgrounds. However most of the schools have only basic equipment such as a few deflated footballs, no nets or bibs and potholed pitches! Some schools even use the car park as a playing ground. Although materials and resources may be scarce, the enthusiasm of the students and colleagues more than makes up for any hardships.
You usually will be coaching for 3 to 5 hours at one school only, however there is a possibility that you may coach in two sessions and at two different venues. You will work in secondary schools and you will normally help out with all age groups. You will be in popular demand wherever you are placed and the children will crowd around you like a celebrity and want your autograph. Keep a pen on you at all times!
Coaching is usually done in three sessions, morning, afternoon and evening, at three different venues. You may work in secondary and primary schools and you will normally help out with all age groups. What you'll gain from doing this Project:
- An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into Indian culture.
- New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
- An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
- The enormous satisfaction of helping disadvantaged children and knowing that you made a difference to them. (And you will fall in love with them, that's a guarantee.)
- And maybe best of all ... an unforgettable experience!
You'll most likely share a Travellers house with other volunteers and you may share a room with up to three other volunteers. The house is very nice, with marbled tiled floors, verandas back and front and a rooftop patio/garden. It has mod cons and facilities, including some en-suite bathrooms, showers and Western toilets. There is a communal lounge with TV.
Your food will be prepared for you, but there may be occasional days when you'll need to prepare your own meals (on the cook's day off, for example). Food is a mixture of Western and local meals and includes fruit, fruit juice, etc. You'll also have access to the kitchen if you want to make snacks or drinks.Additional activities you can do while on this project:

“We actually created a mini world cup competition when we were there and we awarded medals, such as Best Skilled Player, etc. We also bought a whole kit for our groups because they were such good students. The kids were fantastic and were very sad to see us leave. We just hope that other Travellers volunteers can take up from where we left off.”
