Be a Schools Assistant in Oz
Be a Schools Assistant in Oz
Duration: from 7.00 Months to 12.00 Months
Countries: AustraliaLattitude Schools Assistants in Australia provide classroom help to day and boarding schools, and have the choice between traditional and indigenous teaching placements. In both kinds of placements you will have a wide range of duties, from helping with one-on-one tutoring and supervising students in the boarding house, to leading extracurricular activities, such as sports and music clubs. The main difference between our traditional and indigenous placements is that in the latter many students will not be native English speakers. This means that you will have to adapt your approach to non-native speakers and place extra emphasis on improving students' literacy skills. Both of these types of placement are an excellent opportunity for you to gain valuable teaching experience while getting to know your students and soaking up the contagiously up-beat Aussie spirit. All applicants are matched to placements to ensure that there is a good fit between the volunteer and their host school. So whether you are sporty, musical or adventurous we'll find the place for you! Lattitude Global Volunteering is an international youth development charity that has been sending volunteers on challenging structured and exciting voluntary placements around the world for 40 years.

Schools Assistant placements are located throughout Australia in some of the country’s most welcoming and exciting schools. You will have the chance to work alongside teachers, develop your own teaching skills and build strong relationships with the children as you assist with all aspects of school life.
School Assistant placements offer the chance for volunteers to live and work with young people from a variety of backgrounds. In indigenous communities it may be the first time that the children have attended formal education.
Volunteers assist with the supervision of students in the boarding house before and after school and at weekends, as well as providing assistance in the classroom with one-on-one tutoring and group work.
This is particularly important for students with low levels of grammar and literacy. Help is also required in intensive English programmes for children who do not have English as their native language.
Volunteers have the opportunity to become involved in areas of personal interest such as sport, music and drama. They might also supervise on school camps, help in the school office or library and, for those with driving licences, transport boarders to doctor’s appointments, sports fixtures, and other appointments as required.
