The smallest of all the Andean countries, Ecuador nevertheless manages to cram both cultural and natural wonders of a range and calibre you might expect to find strewn across an entire continent into its modest borders. From Incan empire ruins to Amazonian jungle, from vertiginous Andean mountain peaks to bustling markets, it’s an ideal combination for those wishing to mix an exploration of the natural world with a spot of thrill-seeking.
Phase 1 Learn
Get to grips with basic Spanish, study local cooking, and learn Salsa dancing from the experts!Phase 2 Volunteer
Build much-needed school classrooms on the beach in Puerto Lopez.Phase 3 Explore
Work with local guides to build your own Balsa wood raft for a 3 day river descent, into the legendary Amazon Jungle.LEARN Weeks 1-2
Quito is widely acknowledged as among South America's most beautiful capital cities, and it's the perfect place for you to begin absorbing Ecuadorian culture and learning Spanish. Nestled in a landscape of snow-capped volcanoes, yet enjoying a pleasant climate, your two weeks in Quito will be spent balancing learning with relaxation. Spanish lessons take place either one-to-one or in small groups, leaving ample free time to wander both the history-steeped colonial centre and latter-day bustling bars, cafés and Latin club scene. At the weekend we take a trip to climb Coto Paxi, an active Volcano.
VOLUNTEER Weeks 3-4
It's hard to imagine a more beautiful place to undertake volunteering work than Machalilla Park. In the sea just off its stunning beaches and coastal forests, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of migrating humpback whales. Education and care are essential to local community members of the fishing village of Puerto Lopez, so you'll be helping construct much-needed classrooms and day centres, alongside local people, which also gives you the opportunity to build on the practical Spanish skills you began to develop in weeks 1-2.
EXPLORE Weeks 5-6
Hold tight. You're about to battle the choppy waters of the Napo River as you white water raft through the Amazon jungle. Venture deeper still to the indigenous community of Bajo Puson where you’ll get to build a raft and test it down a journey downstream. Camp in the dense tropical forest surrounded by an almost bewildering array of wildlife, from toucans to turtles, and capybaras to caiman. Then there's a special treat in store for big cat lovers as you trek through the jungle on the trail of the fierce but notoriously elusive jaguar. You'll finish your venture by coming full-circle back to Quito.
This is an all-inclusive trip with full support and a range of services provided before during and after the Venture. You will be accompanied by VentureCo guides throughout the whole journey as well as in country project and activity co-ordinators.
