Take part in a rewarding worthwhile project in an Indian orphanage where you can really make a difference to their lives. We work with many different orphanages, each of which tugs at your heartstrings. Some are for very young children and babies and others are for older children. You'll be able to help with all ages.

These are very worthwhile, satisfying projects and you can choose from two different locations, Madurai or Trivandrum in Kerala.

At the orphanages for younger children and babies there are trained carers, so you'll assist them and give general support where needed. Your support is excellent for the carers as well as the children because it frees their time to concentrate on other areas such as gaining financial support for the orphranage and working on administration.

What you'll gain from doing this Project:
  • An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into Indian culture.
  • New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
  • An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
  • The enormous satisfaction of helping disadvantaged children and knowing that you made a difference to them. (And you will fall in love with them, that's a guarantee.)
  • And maybe best of all ... an unforgettable experience!
Accommodation in Madurai

You'll most likely share a Travellers house with other volunteers and you may share a room with up to three other volunteers. The house is very nice, with marbled tiled floors, verandas back and front and a rooftop patio/garden. It has mod cons and facilities, including some en-suite bathrooms, showers and Western toilets. There is a communal lounge with TV.

Your food will be prepared for you, but there may be occasional days when you'll need to prepare your own meals (on the cook's day off, for example). Food is a mixture of Western and local meals and includes fruit, fruit juice, etc. You'll also have access to the kitchen if you want to make snacks or drinks.

Accommodation in Trivandrum

You'll either live with a host family or in an apartment. In either accommodation you may share a room with another Travellers volunteer. The accommodation you’ll be allocated to will depend on which project you’re doing and the number of volunteers there at the same time as you. However, if you have a preference for either a host family or staying in a flat, we will do our best to accommodate you.

Host Family
For a complete Indian experience we can arrange for you to stay with one of our lovely host families. All of our hosts are very welcoming and not only will be made to feel part of the family you’ll also gain a great insight into Indian culture and customs. Many of our volunteers remain friends with their host families long after they leave India and in some cases they return to the country later especially to visit their family.

Food is provided when you live with a host family.

Apartment Living
Apartments are very comfortable and give you the opportunity to be totally independent yet still living within the local community. The apartments are modern, spacious, light and airy with kitted out kitchens and lounge areas.

FOOD is not included in the placement if you're staying in an apartment, so you'll need to budget for your meals. This also gives you the options to either cook for yourself and make the most of the opportunity to same the fantastic local cafes and restaurants - Remember, Trivandrum food is known as God's own food in God's own country!

User Comments:

“The orphanage is a fantastic place to spend time. The babies and children are adorable, the staffs seem pleased to have us there and we always have lots to do. It’s sad to see how little quality of life the babies/children have but it’s great that we are able to help improve things for them ... if only a little. It’s far far better than I hoped it would be! Thank you for arranging such a great project.” Emma Wolveridge

“It’s chaotic and loud here but there is a charm to the place. Once I got over the crazy driving, the staring and the noise ... I really started to have a good time. Karen and Pradeep are both extremely helpful and friendly. Today they took me to the orphanage to introduce me to Elizabeth and the kids, and they are all just gorgeous! So affectionate and energetic - I can’t wait to start there on Monday!

Karen also took me around the town and showed me where everything was, including the tailor markets where I’m getting a few things made up - highlight was spotting the temple elephant on the street. I also visited the temple with the other volunteers today and it was pretty amazing. The other volunteers are very nice and friendly, and I can’t wait to get to know them all better. The volunteer house is really lovely and I’m going to go home FAT because Jaya is a brilliant cook!”
