English Teaching in Asia

English Teaching in Asia

Duration: from 4.00 Months to 5.00 Months

Countries: China, Vietnam

Asia is an endlessly fascinating continent, and one of the world's most culturally and geographically diverse. In recent years, many Asian countries have experience a surge in economic growth and English language skills are becoming increasingly important for tourism, international trade and general career progression. This is where Lattitude volunteers step in: as native English speakers, your skills will be extremely valuable in your host countries. By teaching English to either adults or children, you will be giving students a gift that can literally change the course of their lives. Similarly, spending time living and volunteering in Asia is also an excellent opportunity for you to gain increasingly valuable language skills - why not pick up some Mandarin in China for example and see where your learning takes you? All applicants are matched to placements to ensure that there is a good fit between the volunteer and their host communities. Lattitude Global Volunteering is an international youth development charity that has been sending volunteers on challenging structured and exciting voluntary placements around the world for 40 years.

Attaining English language skills can open up huge opportunities for people many people around the world. As an English Teacher you will be able to share your valuable skills in kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, universities and other language institutes with people of all ages. While each country has its own approach to language learning, some will have a curriculum to follow while others will expect you to use your initiative. You’ll be greatly valued for your skills in conversational English. These may be used to lead your own class or provide support to an existing English Teacher. Varied aptitudes, ages, class sizes and resources mean you’ll have to think on your feet and occasionally improvise, but you’ll never have a dull moment in the classroom.

China

If you are looking for a new cultural experience then China is for you. It is best to go to China with an open mind and open eyes: attempt to view things from a Chinese perspective and to understand Chinese ways of thinking. In China you will constantly find new doors opening for you. It is a truly unique cultural experience and will give you the opportunity to improve your students’ English language skills and future prospects. It will suit those who are enthusiastic, engaging, can think on their feet and have the confidence to teach up to 50 children at any one time.

Vietnam

English Teaching placements are mostly in colleges and universities with  some in primary and secondary schools.  Volunteers provide students with the opportunity to practice their spoken English by leading activities such as conversation, role playing, singing and debating.  A range of extracurricular activities including conversation groups, visiting students’ homes and playing games add great value and enjoyment to the placements.  Volunteers may also be asked to teach the teachers as well to assist in enhancing their confidence in English conversation.

User Comments:

“I had planned to take a year out for a long time. I wanted a break from education, a chance to do something different, an opportunity to rise to new challenges, gain independence, experience new cultures and meet new people. I had intended to work in the developing world in a caring capacity. However, more than anything else, my main aim was to go and do voluntary work abroad.”
