Do you like working with children and want to make a real difference to the lives of others? Then teaching English to school children in Madurai, Southern India, is the perfect project for you...

Some of the schools that we work with are very poor and lack facilities, so your presence will make a real impact. Nearly all schools have basic facilities (including some general teaching aids and equipment) and sports fields for football and cricket are common.

You may work in either primary or secondary schools and you will normally help out with all age groups. No previous experience is necessary but a good sense of fun is essential!

What you'll gain from doing this Project:
  • An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into Asia.
  • New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
  • An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
  • The enormous satisfaction of helping disadvantaged children and knowing that you made a difference to them
  • And maybe best of all ... an unforgettable experience!
Accommodation in Madurai

You will most likely share a Travellers house with other volunteers and you may share a room with up to three other volunteers. The house is very nice, with marble tiled floors, verandahs back and front and a rooftop patio/garden. It has mod cons and facilities, including some en-suite bathrooms, showers and Western toilets. There is a communal lounge with TV.

Your food will be prepared for you, but there may be occasional days when you'll need to prepare your own meals (on the cook's day off, for example). Food is a mixture of Western and local meals and includes fruit, fruit juice, etc. You'll also have access to the kitchen if you want to make snacks or drinks.

Accommodation in Trivandrum

You'll either live with a host family or in an apartment. In either accommodation you may share a room with another Travellers volunteer. The accommodation you’ll be allocated to will depend on which project you’re doing and the number of volunteers there at the same time as you. However, if you have a preference for either a host family or staying in a flat, we will do our best to accommodate you.

Host Family
For a complete Indian experience we can arrange for you to stay with one of our lovely host families. All of our hosts are very welcoming and not only will be made to feel part of the family you’ll also gain a great insight into Indian culture and customs. Many of our volunteers remain friends with their host families long after they leave India and in some cases they return to the country later especially to visit their family.

Food is provided when you live with a host family.

Apartment Living
Apartments are very comfortable and give you the opportunity to be totally independent yet still living within the local community. The apartments are modern, spacious, light and airy with kitted out kitchens and lounge areas.

Food is not included in the placement if you're staying in an apartment, so you'll need to budget for your meals. This also gives you the options to either cook for yourself and make the most of the opportunity to same the fantastic local cafes and restaurants - Remember, Trivandrum food is known as God's own food in God's own country!

Eating out is cheap in India. You’ll be able to sample excellent south Indian Thali’s and Dosa’s. Most restaurants are good quality and you can sample North as well as South Indian dishes along with a selection of Western food. Vegetarian food is in abundance! Bakeries and snack shops are on every street and you must try the delicious fruit; there is so much choice; mango, pineapple, water melon, custard apples and jack fruit make a very refreshing option and coconut water is also delicious.

User Comments:

“I am gaining immeasurable amounts of experience over a whole spectrum of issues and primarily, excellent experience of teaching which will aid my PGCE application. I feel that I am gaining experience of another culture first hand, experience of life and learning a lot about myself too.

The placement in India has challenged me in so many ways. I have a much deeper sense of gratitude for my life at home now. It is very unique to live in another country for a protracted period and embrace a different way of life. After all, you don’t learn about a country just through a textbook!

The best thing about the about the placement is the children, their enthusiasm and energy has been delightful. I would most definitely recommend this placement. I abhor clichés but this really is an experience of a lifetime, miss at your peril!”
