This rescue centre was founded to cope with an ever increasing flow of animals into Indonesia, animals that were a result of the illegal animal trade, were confiscated or illegally kept. Its main aim is to rehabilitate the animals back into the wild but also to ensure a safe haven for those animals that are unable to be rehabilitated. The natural habitat of the orangutan is usually Borneo or Sumatra, but this centre on the island of Java is able to provide sanctuary for orangutans that are unable to be rehabilitated back into the wild either for reasons of disability or illness giving them a safe haven to live out the rest of their lives. The centre is located on the outskirts of Yogyakarta also know locally as Yogya in 14 hectares of land so ample space for all the animals! You will be working with the team at the centre and as such you will have back stage passes to the work that they do – you won`t be a tourist here! You will be helping to prepare food and feed the animals, cleaning the enclosures and general maintenance of the centre, you will also be learning about the conservation efforts of the centre and will get an insight into primate welfare, including husbandry and enrichment.  The centre aims to give the animals the best care it can and as these animals are wild and not domestic pets the centre does operate a strict ‘hands off’ policy, so strictly no cuddling of the primates no matter how much you are tempted!

It is important that the local community also understands the work of the centre and why it is wrong to trade in illegal wildlife so the centre has also introduced an education programme.  You will be helping to teach English to the local community not only to improve their chances of a good career in the tourist industry but also to promote the centre`s great work. By doing this is it hoped that there will be an increased positivity regarding animal welfare.

You will be living in accommodation in twin share rooms with en suite bathrooms and all meals are included based on local Indonesian cuisine – delicious – vegetarians are welcome! The accommodation is on site too located in a rural area where you will be able to hear the gibbons from your room!

Apart from the fees paid for your accommodation the additional money goes back into the project to fund the welfare of the animals, in the longer term this money will also be used for improving the enclosures and on release projects where possible.
