Work with newspapers, radio and TV stations... Gain valuable work experience in a competitive industry while assisting local professionals... Pursue your own area of interest with support and guidance.
What to expect
Work with TV and Radio stations and/or national newspapers on journalistic projects, covering sports and non-sports issues. Learn about African journalism while experiencing the culture and lush landscapes of Ghana. There is also an opportunity to teach journalism to young Ghanaians to develop their writing style, encourage free-thinking, and introduce the value of constructive criticism. All this while living as part of our community with other volunteers and enjoying the diverse adventure-travel opportunities in West Africa.
NB: No prior media training or qualifications are required, although an interest in journalism and media relations is expected.
Journalism in Ghana
The standard of media coverage in Ghana is gradually improving and, through our media placement, volunteers can make a significant contribution to this progression. With opportunities available within newspapers, radio and TV, you will gain first-hand experience of Ghana's media culture.
Your Placement
A media placement is intended for volunteers who are seeking or already have experience in the industry. Both aspiring reporters and media professionals are warmly welcomed. During the placement, you will have the chance to work in a number of newspapers, radio stations and TV networks according to your level of interest and experience. We offer positions ranging from researchers at a local paper to being the half-time analyst for major international matches on TV. Our extensive links will allow you to experiment in a number of different spheres.
Your Role
The literary and communication skills you have developed through your western education will make you a worthwhile member of any team. Editing, copywriting, reporting, interviewing and researching are all possible roles that you might adopt. You will also be working alongside some of Ghana's leading journalists and reporters who are there to offer you guidance throughout your placement.
We also encourage you to get involved with schools and sports academies to teach classes in media, creative writing and the rudiments of journalism. You will also have the chance to oversee the production of a newspaper created by the children. This will be an excellent chance for you to give something back to the community and to mix with Ghana's ambitious youngsters. Alternatively, you may want to use your placement as an opportunity to collect information for your own journalistic projects. If you are an aspiring or professional photojournalist or travel writer, our extensive connections and resident staff (British and Ghanaian) will provide a wealth of material for your work.
If you are a student studying journalism, or any other media-based course, and able to use part of your studies to gain hands-on experience, we can make an elective programme ideal for you. We have had a number of students working in Ghana towards their degree, either filling course electives or researching and working towards their dissertation. And if you are already qualified, it is a perfect opportunity to gain the sought-after experience all professional employers look for.
Optional Teaching
In addition to the media placement, volunteers have the opportunity to teach classes, or assist in teaching classes, with one of the sports academies or schools based in Accra. This will give you another great experience and allow you to make a difference through formal teaching. With a Western education you will be able to contribute massively to the standard of tuition that the students receive. Subject areas include English (language and literature), maths, science, journalism, business, IT, RE and a whole variety of extra-curricular activities.
Social Life
We believe it is important to give volunteers the chance to unwind and have fun while they are away. The team therefore organises a variety of activities, bringing volunteers together to share their experiences and have a good time. Some of these activities include trips to Ghana's best night spots, All-You-Can-Eat-and-Drink nights, 5-a-side football and volleyball matches.
Travel and Adventure
We will encourage you to explore Ghana either independently or in groups and you will have free time to travel the country and sample its breathtaking sights and meet some of Africa's friendliest people. The capital, Accra, is full of great places to go and you will meet both locals and other travellers at a variety of bars and restaurants that provide authentic African live music and dancing. There are also a large number of western-style pubs and clubs, including an Irish Bar, an American Sports Bar and a series of dance-venues very close to where you are living. And if you fancy a football experience to remember, then prepare yourself for watching Hearts of Oak at the National Stadium where the locals wave flags, blow horns and dance on the roofs of the terraces!
