If you are a strong swimmer and think you can handle becoming a professional beach lifeguard, Australia is the place to train. You will work with some of the world's leading professional instructors and train in the world's biggest pool, the Pacific Ocean!
Where will I be?
If 'the Hoff' is one of your idols, this Beach Lifeguard programme is just what you need to start living the dream. The programme is located in Sydney, capital of New South Wales, and is one of the top ocean lifeguard programmes in the world. The programme is based at Manly Life Saving Club - the most successful surf club in the history of the Australia Surf Life Saving Association - and will revolve around Manly Beach and Manly Swimming Centre. Manly is situated about half an hour north of Sydney on the east coast of Australia and is the first of Sydney’s ‘Northern Beaches’.
You will live in Manly in campus-style accommodation alongside other trainees, close to the beach, the ferry and Manly’s numerous surf shops, cafes and bars.
What will I be doing?
The course is designed to teach you more about reading the ocean and maintaining a safe beach than you ever thought possible. You will learn how to identify potentially hazardous weather and water conditions including rips and tides, as well as the necessary techniques used to minimise the risks associated with them. The prevention of land and water based incidents is vital to the success of any beach lifeguard and you will spend plenty of time in the water and on the beach, using your own experiences to learn about the ocean.
You will also spend time training with the Manly Life Saving Club and developing your surf craft skills. As your perception of dangerous situations improves you will also be taught important first aid techniques including CPR and how to use oxygen equipment. The course includes other elements including personal watercraft and all terrain vehicle training (jet skis and quad bikes to you and me) to complete your land and water instruction.
Why in Australia?
Australia is the perfect location to train as an Ocean Lifeguard thanks to its large swells and rugged coastline, not to mention the large number of people who spend time in and near the water every day. If you are passionate about water safety and want to reach your peak in personal strength and fitness, this course is for you!
What can I do after the programme?
Australia is an excellent country to travel around and the East Coast is a great place to start. Sydney is a bustling, cosmopolitan city with loads to see and do, from climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge to surfing at Bondi Beach, you will never be short of a new adventure! Head north to explore the hotspots of Byron Bay, Brisbane and Cairns, or south to discover Canberra (the capital city), Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road. The size of the country can be a little daunting but transport for travellers in Australia is excellent so if you decide you just can't bear to leave anything out (north, south, centre, east, west), there’s no reason why you can't do it all. The friends you've made during the lifeguarding course will undoubtedly want to travel as well so grab your cork hat, your boomerang and your thongs (all will be explained) and head off around one of the most travel-friendly countries in the world.
