Our Medical Experience and Observation projects will provide you with an excellent preparation for your career in medicine. You will experience the stark contrast between medical practice in the West and developing countries, and are likely to gain unparalleled experience of a number of conditions which, for social or economic reasons have been left untreated and have developed into advanced pathological conditions. The programme is tailored, where possible, to your individual experience and interests and to your preferred size and type of hospital or clinic. Special placements are also available for those interested in nursing or physiotherapy. You will be involved in the day-to-day running of hospitals and clinics, observing or directly assisting doctors and nurses. The Gap Year programme is mainly observational. Volunteers shadow a doctor etc around various wards in a hospital or clinic. You might find yourself, for example, watching surgery in the operating theatre such as a birth by caesarean section, or working with a doctor on his rounds in a big city hospital. By demonstrating initiative and enthusiasm, you can help out in simple but practical ways, whilst vastly increasing your medical knowledge.
All medical volunteers also get the chance to participate in Outreach programs – educating children in orphanages and schools about matters such as HIV/AIDS, nutrition and hygiene as well as attending to minor injuries the children might have which otherwise would get no medical attention. Ghana is the home of Africa's friendliest and most welcoming people, an intensely colourful land of dense forest, wild savannah and great beaches. In Ghana, Teaching & Projects Abroad works in four centres: Accra, the capital city, the Akuapem Hills, the city of Kumasi and another town, Cape Coast. All volunteers are allocated a supervisor within their placement, and also have the back-up of our staff in the local office and the UK.
During your spare time, there are great opportunities here for travelling around Ghana, and surrounding countries such as Togo or Mali and other parts of Africa.
Our users say...“I got to see so many things – the work was quite flexible so there was a chance to see most of the different departments including the Surgical, Maternity, Medical and Paediatric Wards, Outpatients Department, Pharmacy, Physio and the Laboratories” - Sarah Lownsborough
