How would you like to work with children in a world class ski resort? And enjoy an amazing social life? Oyster will provide you with a job, accommodation and the best working holiday you can imagine!
We’ve been sending people to Canada since 2000 and have secured some great job opportunities. You could work for the ‘Whistler Kids’ crèche, playing games indoors or skiing on the nursery slopes. There are fantastic benefits including a season ski pass and a highly subsidised Level 1 Ski Instructor Course ! (£230 approx.) Some participants have even progressed to Level 2.
If you don’t want to work with children, you could join a lively team in a bar or restaurant.
These placements are available for students aged between 18-30 that have a confirmed UCAS place, are currently studying at a UK university or who have graduated in the last 12 months and are British citizens.
The Jobs...
If you love working with kids then we have a great job for you working at the Whistler resort crèche. Your job will involve looking after children of varying ages while their parents ski. You will be based indoors and on nursery slopes, where you might also give basic ski lessons. Once you get your Level 1 Instructor Certificate you can take them out on the other slopes.
Alternatively, Oyster can secure you a job in one of Whistler’s busy bars and restaurants. The exact role you have will depend on your previous work experience. There is usually a rotation system so you may be washing dishes one day and serving customers the next. You’ll work hard but there are great rewards too – pay, new friends and the skiing!
By accepting a place offered by Oyster, you will be guaranteed a job as long as you can provide a clean Police Check and a UCAS letter/Graduation Certificate.
The Pay...
You can expect to earn above the Canadian minimum wage which most people find enough to be able to live comfortably, have a great social life and even save money for when they have finished the placement. Wages are approximately £200 per week.
Skiing Experience...
To work for Whistler Kids you need to have good skiing experience. If you have only been skiing a few times or if you don’t want to work with children, the food and beverage jobs would be ideal. You’ll have plenty of chances to ski in your free time. Over your 5 months you will become an expert on the slopes!
Accommodation...
You will receive great accommodation in Whistler – quite an achievement in such a busy resort. Oyster will secure this in advance, making sure you have a place to stay before you leave the UK. The accommodation is similar to university accommodation. Each apartment has 2 bedrooms, a lounge, bathroom and kitchen. There will be 4 people to each apartment so you will be sharing a room.
You will have to pay rent once you arrive in Whistler but this is great value and works out to be roughly 1 hours pay per night. This comes directly off of your pay cheque every 2 weeks.
Do I get a social life..?
You will be working 5 days a week full time on average over the 5 months. During peak times, though, you may work more hours and during the low season you may have a bit more time off.
There is so much to do during your time off. There is obviously the world-class skiing and snowboarding in Whistler itself, not forgetting cross-country skiing and ice skating! Or if you need to give the knees a rest, there are plenty of bars to relax or you could visit the nearby city of Vancouver.
You will be part of a group of people enjoying the most fantastic social life. And you’ll come back with some great stories to tell and some even better friends.
Most people choose to travel around Canada and North America before flying home to really make the most of their trip.
