Aside from befriending elephants you will also be making some new friends of the human variety when you work with children and young people at a special needs school. Your weekends will be filled with stunning scenery as you float along Kerala’s famous backwaters by houseboat, spend time fishing with the locals and take a tour of historic Kochi.Call: 0845 344 7592
You’ll spend your first few days in India experiencing local life and taking in the sights of Kerala. On a tour through the city you will see the Santa Cruz Basilica, the home of Vasca de Gama, a famous Portuguese explorer, the home of Kerala’s royal family and the Jewish Synagogue.
Then it’s time to start your volunteer project; the school works with 70 children and young people with special needs in the Kochi area, providing much-needed care and education. The project aims to give these marginalised children and young people a better quality of life, care and a chance at independence by teaching them basic life skills.
As a volunteer you’ll be working from 9:30am to 3:30pm and will get involved with a variety of activities that could include singing, dancing, playing games, teaching Basic English, arts and crafts, and assisting with feeding.
During your time at the project you’ll also get to experience some amazing local beauty and wonderful wildlife! You’ll set off on not one but two backwater cruises, passing by quaint villages, fisherman hard at work, women washing garments in the water, and local children. You’ll also travel to an elephant camp where you’ll be able to help local mahouts (elephant keepers) give their elephants a bath before heading on an afternoon trip to Athirapally waterfalls to wonder at the scenery and take a dip in the rock pools.
