Work on the events & marketing team for a magazine on Chinese Culture. This fascinating and unusual work experience placement enables you to take a peek behind the scenes of a magazine and events company in Beijing! In a world of competition where an army of graduates are lining up for the top jobs, this project would set you apart from the crowd and make employers look twice.

You will work on the PR, events & marketing team for a magazine on Chinese Culture. The magazine publishes both a print magazine and an e-newsletter, but is also involved in running events for diplomats, tourists and other 'foreigners' interested in learning about Chinese Culture.

Your role may involve aspects of PR, Marketing and/or events, depending on your skills and what is going on at the magazine at the time. Therefore, you must be prepared to be flexible and work in any of these areas depending on the magazine's needs. The type of work you may be involved in can include:

  • Creating advertisements for the magazine
  • The revision of existing or design of new marketing tools, for example subscription forms
  • Collection of data to assist with target marketing
  • Assisting with putting on events for foreigners interested in learning about Chinese culture, including everything from finding a venue to welcoming the guests on the night
  • Researching promotion or affiliate opportunities - for example, creating a proposal for NGOs in Beijing to work with the Magazine.

This is not by any means an exhaustive list - this is a dynamic placement where work content is constantly changing. So, as long as you are flexible and prepared to adapt, you will have the opportunity to learn and grown within this placement under the supervision of an experienced marketing team.

What you'll gain from doing this Project:

  • An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into Chinese culture.
  • You'll learn a lot from experts in your field about how they work in a cultural environment that's different to what you're used to.
  • New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
  • An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
  • And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!

Accommodation

You will stay in a modern and friendly, central hostel along with the other volunteers. The hostel features air-conditioning, 24-hour hot water, a self-catering dining room, laundry room, general store, game room and a reading room. Internet is available at an hourly rate. User Comments:

“The work experience I am gaining here at The World of Chinese is wonderfully extensive and interesting. The office dynamic is casual, easy-going, and incredibly friendly. Andy and the team are fantastic. With such a small and new publication, even an intern plays a large role in the writing process and in meetings. I often get to provide “the foreigner perspective,” as the magazine is geared at expats in China and students interested in the culture of the country. The focus of the magazine is also great because I learn a lot of China-related tips and snippets of history that I wouldn’t get from any other magazine.”
