For applicants from the UK, we have a number of bursary schemes available for volunteers from a variety of backgrounds.

Our bursary scheme and funded placement projects reduce the barrier of cost for young people experiencing financial problems. They are designed to help young people who would not otherwise be able to afford to go.

Your placement

Volunteering in a school is an ideal way to get to know New Zealand.

Your work will be in a school in either the North or South Island. In boarding schools, duties may involve the supervision of younger pupils on some evenings and some weekends and volunteers who have attended day schools in the United Kingdom should be aware that life in a boarding school extends before and beyond the 9:00am to 4:00pm pattern.

New Zealand schools have a great tradition in sport and are always looking for good and keen sports players, but many are also justly proud of their music and drama and help with these is always required.

Equally, outdoor pursuits is an important part of the programme and in these cases Duke of Edinburgh Awards will be an advantage. In short, the placements offer a variety of jobs, some of which will be tedious, but the overall opinion of the volunteers is that their year has been 'awesome'!

When can I go?

Some placements are for a year (starting in August). Others start in January and last until August.

Locations/accommodation

Placements are in both the North and South Island, mainly in boarding schools. There are a few day schools where the volunteer lives with a host family.

Our users say...

"I worked in the primary school of an independent school (4-18 years) just outside Auckland. I was there from 8.30-3, monday to friday with weekends and bank holidays off, as well as 2 blocks of 3 weeks holiday. I was mainly involved in music and performing arts but also kindergarten, PE and year 6 English, Maths and generally a bit of everything! Usually I assissted in the classroom and helped the ones who were struggling, or in the case of the kindergarten, pushed swings until I couldn't do it any more!"
