Witness nature at its most dramatic amidst the lively friendly setting of Foz’s delightful ambiance!

Snuggled in the border of Brazil, on the doorstep of Argentina and Paraguay, Foz de Iguacu is a charming sociable town evolved around the spectacular Iguacu Falls (larger, louder and more impressive than the better known Niagra Falls). At two and a half miles wide these horseshoe-shaped falls are four times the width of Niagara Falls in North America. The falls divide into some 275 separate cascading waterfalls catching the light and creating a kaleidoscope of rainbows in their spray.

With residents and students from Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina this is an international and interesting town. With bars, restaurants, cinemas, bowling and dancing, not to mention to the warmth and interest of the locals and the incredible natural scenery nearby, Foz promises to be an enjoyable and unforgettable Brazilian experience.

Teaching ART in Foz:

We work at a selection of institutions, catering for children ranging in age from very young to teenagers. With many worthwhile Travellers projects on-going in Foz, you choose the age group you want to work with. You may want to concentrate your time in just one institute or you may be keen to spread your help between a selection of institutes, gaining a varied experience. The children are often very poor. They have magnificent spirits however and they genuinely love school!!

Art, drama, dance and IT offer these children both exposure to English, an opportunity to express themselves in new creative ways and, perhaps vitally, a whole lot more fun in their childhood! No qualifications or previous experience are necessary, just a good dose of enthusiasm!

Whilst exposure to English is vital to the kids of these projects, it is absolutely possible to use different subjects to achieve this goal, from music to drama to art to sport to IT! If you wanted to focus on teaching one of these subjects, we have such projects available.

Accommodation and food in Foz do Iguassu

The accommodation is in a lovely family-run hostel in a quiet area of the town with excellent bus links. You will be provided with clean bed linen and a very friendly atmosphere.

There are communal kitchen facilities, with all necessary electric equipment. You will have full access to the kitchen if you’d like to prepare your own food at any time. There are also laundry facilities which you will have access to use.

You will most likely have a bedroom to yourself. If you have a preference, please be sure to let us know at the time of booking and we can make the necessary arrangements for you. You will have a single bed and a wardrobe to store your clothes and things.

Past volunteers have regarded eating out as one of the highlights of living in South America, and an essential part of Brazilian culture! Because of this, the price of your placement does not include food. This way you’ll get the chance to venture out and sample some of the fabulous food which Brazil is famous for.

The Brazilian passion for food is reflected in the numbers of people you will see spending long, balmy evenings dining in restaurants and al fresco in the city’s buzzing streets, feasting on fare from the traditional Feijoada (black beans and pork stew) or Mariscada (seafood stew) to modern global cuisine. If you’re partial to tipple, you might like to indulge in a caipiranha, Brazil’s traditional carnival drink made with lime and cachaça, best enjoyed in the sunshine with a churrasco, which is a Brazilian barbeque of rice, meats and - of course - salsa!

The cost of eating out in Foz can vary from a just a couple of pounds up to a couple of hundred pounds! This is one place where you certainly won’t have any trouble eating well on a tight budget - there are some very inexpensive options available and you'll dine out handsomely on about £4 ($6); although you could be lucky and get away with spending even less and still be eating well. The trick is to keep your eyes peeled for the bargain eateries offering specials such as buffet lunches. Also don’t forget the supermarkets are a good option and are comparable in standard to those found back home.
