For applicants from the UK, we have a number of bursary schemes available for volunteers from a variety of backgrounds.

Our bursary scheme and funded placement projects reduce the barrier of cost for young people experiencing financial problems. They are designed to help young people who would not otherwise be able to afford to go.

Vietnam is one of the most a vibrant, beautiful and friendly Asian destinations, with many worth while and interesting gap year projects to choose from.

Your placement

The roles are as English language teaching assistants in colleges and universities. Within the weekly programme of 20 hours' classroom work, private tuition may be arranged. There are also a few 3 months placements starting in May / early June - all in Hanoi.

Australian Lattitude volunteers also work in Vietnam. Before your placement starts, you will attend an orientation and a one-week Teaching Skills Course to help prepare you for your work. The orientation and teaching Skills Course will be held in Ho Chi Minh City with all volunteers present. This will allow all volunteers to get to know each other, before going to their different host institutions.

When can I go?

Early September, February and May.

Locations

In the north, current placements are in Hanoi, the capital, in Hai Duong, Hai Phong, and in Thai Nguyen; in the south, they are in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC, formerly Saigon) the business capital, and Can Tho, in the Mekong Delta.

Accommodation

This will be provided free, either at the placement site or rented by the Host Institution nearby.

Qualities / skills

Teachers in Vietnam are held in high esteem. Rated most highly will be friendliness, patience, perseverance, flexibility and a sense of humour. Much of the value of a placement, and much of its enjoyment, will be in extra-curricular activities such as conversation groups, visiting students' homes, playing games. Skills at sport, drama, music and art may be appreciated.

Our users say...

"Choosing to do a Lattitude placement will always be something that I am very glad to have done. It was an experience that I will not forget and being a volunteer taught me new skills that have helped to develop me in the following years afterwards. I learned many things about the community I lived in and also about the differences in society in far east Asia, and learning these things from inside the community itself was very enjoyable, interesting and fulfilling as my experience compromise of many smaller experiences, each one with its individual value. I just regret that I can’t share them all in this small report."
