For applicants from the UK, we have a number of bursary schemes available for volunteers from a variety of backgrounds.

Our bursary scheme and funded placement projects reduce the barrier of cost for young people experiencing financial problems. They are designed to help young people who would not otherwise be able to afford to go.

Lattitude Global Volunteering places volunteers in Vanuatu, a group of islands in the South West Pacific, 660 miles due west of Fiji and about 1200 miles north east of Sydney.

The project consists of teaching in Junior Secondary Schools on four of the islands in Vanuatu. Lattitude Global Volunteeringpers mainly teach English, maths, science and social science to classes of up to 40 pupils. They also help with games, drama and other extra curricular activities as well as boarding duties. There are opportunities for French speakers looking to improve their language skills.

Most schools are in remote locations with limited facilities. The standard of accommodation varies greatly. At some schools volunteers will have modern houses with running water and flush toilets; others will have outside water tanks and `bush toilets’. The electricity supply is usually limited to about three hours in the evening. Communications with the outside world are often difficult but all schools are located fairly close to airfields served by Vanuatu’s internal air service.

There is a preference for Christians but this is not mandatory. Militant agnostics or atheists might not be welcome as tolerance and attendance at services is expected.

Our users say...

"We slid through the jungle. The path a torrent of water; the hurricane that barely missed. Small children run past, screaming 'white-man, white-man!' in the unabashed racism of the innocent. I smile. The bamboo aqueduct flows through the trees, accompanied by a sparse swarm of fire-flies. And behind it all, a coconut tree definitively silhouetted against the moon screaming: The South Pacific... This world, once so foreign, so exciting, so frightening, was now ours."
