About is a global social network and a travel advice website based in the United Kingdom. Built around a travel community, its members engage in the site through blogs, events, messageboards and photos. It provides advice, ideas and opportunities on everything related to gap years and backpacking, including information on planning your trip, destinations, volunteering, and working abroad.


Gapyear Company Limited was first launched in July 1998 by travel writer Tom Griffiths and IT consultant Peter Pedrick.

Tom Griffiths had become a prominent voice in the travel industry after publishing Before You Go, a book about gap year planning in 1997. The book had been received to widespread acclaim and Griffiths became Young Travel Writer of the Year.

In April 1998, Griffiths was introduced to IT consultant and entrepreneur Peter Pedrick, who was considering a gap year at time.

In July 1998, Griffiths and Pedrick formed Gapyear Company Limited and launched, which became in 1999 and in 2000.

As a media spokesperson for and the gap year industry, Griffiths became a prominent figure in the media. He also became a government advisor on gap years to the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and to the Home Office in the UK, as well as government departments in Australia, Germany and the United States of America.

In 2005, worked with Advance Payment Solutions (APS) to launch the Gap Year Cashplus Prepaid Mastercard, a first for the backpacker travel market. played a role in defining the underlying principles of Fair Trade Volunteering, worked with Way Out Experiences (WOX) to launch The Great Volunteer Project and built a long-running relationship with Connexions to help give advice to students during A-level clearing.
