Balance, Focus, and Held Breath

The fascinating Concurs de Castell celebration takes place in Tarragona, Spain every two years. Every other October, the Le Tarraco Arena and the streets of Tarragona are filled with 32 teams of everyday people climbing up each others’ backs and onto shoulders in an effort to make the tallest human pyramid. Even children from the age of five can take part!
This human-tower extravaganza has been celebrated in Spain since the 18th century and is meant to symbolise the traditional Valencian dance. Each brave contestant wears a bright colour and a black sash, called a faixa, which provides much-needed back support. It’s pretty awesome.
