Amsterdam’s oldest prostitutes retire
At the age of 70 they’re finally hanging up their knickers and whips
Amsterdam is famous for is beautiful canals, its cosmopolitan vibe, and, of course, its loose morals. Often when you think of Amsterdam the first things you think of is cannabis cafes and the red light district. Unfortunately, people around the world will be shocked and upset to learn that Amsterdam’s oldest prostitutes are to retire at the grand old age of 70.
Louise and Martine Fokkens, twins, are believed to be Amsterdam’s oldest prostitutes, and after 50 years on the job it’s thought that they’ve had approximately 355,000 men between them.
Practically speaking, the two have been retired for some years now, a factor of both advancing arthritis and an admitted difficulty in attracting new clients. But Martine still has a regular, and said “I couldn’t give him up. He’s been coming to me for so long like it’s like going to church on a Sunday.”
They spoke fondly to the Sun about the Golden Age of prostitution in Amsterdam, which they describe as occurring before the Netherlands legalised sex work and before “the eastern European mafia” took control of the trade.
Last year, the twins were featured in a documentary called Meet the Fokkens. The women are also published authors, having written Ouwehoeren Op Reis (Traveling with the Fokkens), and are working on a second title. They hope that the income from their books and film can see them through their retirement.
Ladies, we salute your innings…
