Ethics at work?

Backpacking and travelling on a gap year offers you unrivalled opportunities for creativity. A common pastime while travelling is sitting in a café, watching the world go by, writing in a diary or journal. Often, people come back from their gap year inspired to do something creative, perhaps as a photographer or as a travel writer, or even to contribute something back to society. But opportunities can appear few and far between in the commercial world.

Recognising the difficulties creative graduates often face in finding their place in the corporate world, Gerard Davies, director of Contented, has developed a new creative leadership programme incorporating an international 'learning adventure' for disenfranchised graduates seeking an ethical role in society. Subsidised by the European Commission and the Contented cooperative, it introduces graduates across generations, disciplines and borders to responsible enterprise, and explores commercial opportunities and the role of creative processes in helping employers embed modern sustainable practices. The programme is linked to leadership and employability qualifications accredited by ILM and ASDAN that are supported by the Confederation of British Industry.

20 unemployed and ‘struggling’ freelancers will get the opportunity to jet off on a fortnights’ expenses-paid research assignment to the Film Market at Prague’s OneWorld International human rights festival in March – the largest of its kind on the planet! Activities are led by Gerard Davies, a former journalist, using film, social media and other technology to compile and publish reports on how businesses care for their planet and people. Davies stresses that the main aim is not to source jobs in the media. Rather, to help people analyse creative approaches to business and explore how they can help other sectors change the way they operate.

He said: "We have met thousands of people who, like us, are turned-off by the idea of a job in an economy driven purely by profit. We want to help them communicate the business benefits of responsible behaviour – and earn a living taking a lead in tipping the balance to a more sustainable way of doing business."

Currently recruiting the last remaining places for their creative enterprise programme, they’re specifically looking for people who are unemployed or struggling as a freelancer.

The opportunity is open to any UK resident over the age of 18, with a Level 4 or 5 qualification, who can demonstrate a good command of written English.
