Gap years ‘taking root’ in China

More and more Chinese youngsters are planning a gap year, according to the country’s biggest-selling English-language newspaper.

China Daily says the surge has been triggered by the publication of Sun Dong Chun’s book The Late Gap Year. It records the 30 year-old’s 13-month trip backpacking and volunteering in six countries.

The paper quotes Sun as saying: “When I started my journey in December 2006, I found little Chinese information on the internet about gap years. I never expected that so many Chinese would be interested in it.”

According to the paper, China’s pioneer gappers follow a quite different route even to those from Japan and South Korea with Myanmar and Iran among the stops.
