Beetle mania proves terminal for memorial tree

In an exceptional stroke of irony a tree planted as a memorial to George Harrison, famous for being the lead guitarist of the Beatles, has died after being overrun with… beetles.

The pine sapling was planted in 2004 in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, and by last year had grown to be more than 10 feet tall. Speaking to the LA Times, council officer Tom LaBonge confirmed the tree had been no match for the beetle frenzy.

Harrison was a keen horticulturist during the final years of his life, as indicated by the plaque at the base of the tree, which read: “In memory of a great humanitarian who touched the world as an artist, a musician and a gardener.”

It’s not the first time a death has occurred ironically, though usually it’s the demise of people, not flora, which hits the headlines.
