Now you can cross the road while SnapChatting a picture of your lunch
We’ve all been there: walking down the street while texting a friend a highly important picture of your sandwich/cat/genitals and failing to notice the traffic lights change. You step out, and receive a startling, humiliating honk from a disgruntled driver. The outcome could be far worse.
It’s become such a danger in the German city of Augsburg that it has installed traffic lights in the pavement, so that if a pedestrian is looking down at their phone they won’t miss the sign that it isn’t safe to cross.
This video shows the lights in action.
The new traffic lights flash red when a tram is approaching.
Although it might seem an extreme measure, the move comes two months after a 15-year-old girl was killed by a tram after she had walked into the road while looking at her phone and listening to music.
The success of the lights remains to be seen, with some Augsburg locals claiming to have hardly noticed them. It might take something more to pry our eyes away from our phones.
