Koala goes for cheeky grope

Koala becomes global internet hit after being caught on camera

A koala has become a global internet hit after a photo of him with a strategically placed paw on one of the "Best Jobs in the World" winners was posted on Facebook.

The picture has had more than 3000 "likes" and been shared more than 300 times since it was uploaded to the Visit Queensland Facebook page on Friday.

The photo, with Queensland winner Elisa Detrez, from France, was taken at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast last week.

The saucy marsupial's grip has also generated plenty of comment from fans.

"I think the koala is doing the best job" one wrote.

"I've never seen a koala grin before," wrote another.

Elisa, who was named winner of the park ranger job in Queensland on Friday, said she didn't realise where the koala's paw was at the time.

"I was concentrating on the pictures and questions from the media, and I was worried about the koala escaping," she said.

"It is a wild animal, so we can't control everything. It's funny after all, but I will be more careful next time."

Koalas had been a big part of the campaign for Elisa since the beginning – she even ran down the famous Champs Elysees in Paris in the early stages of the competition to gain exposure and help her get one of the six jobs on offer in the Tourism Australia contest.

"I love koalas," she said.

"It was the first time that I held one and it was wonderful.

"In France, I can't even have a cat at home as I live in a very small flat, so I enjoyed this experience in the great outdoors."

Tourism Australia launched the competition – in which it gave away six "best jobs" around the country – to raise awareness of its Working Holiday Maker program.

The 18 finalists flew to Australia for the final round of challenges and the winners were named in Sydney last week.

Allan Dixon, from Ireland, won the job of outback adventurer in the Northern Territory.

Andrew Smith from the US was named "chief funster", attending VIP parties and events in NSW, and Roberto Seba from Brazil was named lifestyle photographer at TimeOut magazine in Victoria.

Rich Keam from England will take the job as taste master in Western Australia and Greg Snell from Canada will become wildlife caretaker in South Australia.

The winners will start their jobs later this year.
