Melbourne wins the title of most liveable city for fifth time in a row
We’ve been telling you for ages that Australia is one of the best countries in the world, and now we have even more evidence to back it up. Melbourne has just been named the world’s most liveable city for the fifth year in a row, with Adelaide ranking joint 5th, Sydney in 7th, and Perth in 9th.
The rankings are also kind to Canada, another gap year favourite, as Vancouver ranked 3rd, Toronto 4th, and Calgary joint 5th.
The results come from the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) liveability survery of 140 cities. The survey rates cities out of 100 based on health care, education, stability, culture, and environment and infrastructure. Melbourne earned a whopping 97.5 out of 100.
“Those that score best tend to be mid-sized cities in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density,” said the EIU report.
This might be why hugely popular tourist cities such as London and Paris did not fare too well on the survey. Many European and North American destinations have also been impacted by decreased stability and the threat of terror attacks.
At the very bottom of the rankings at number 140 is Damascus, Syria, hardly a surprise given the ongoing conflict there.
