Mud, Sweat and Gap Years

Bear Grylls is launching a gapper preparation couse

The imagination takes on the attributes of a runaway train when planning a gap year. The promise of unfamiliar environments, culture and people amalgamates into a fizzing ball of scarcely containable anticipation. Unanswerable questions bounce around your mind like pinballs, and you find yourself dreaming up increasingly epic adventures in the nights leading up to departure date.

It’s more than just diving into the unknown. It’s diving into the unknown and then treading water for months on end.  It’s a test.

A test which, thankfully, the vast majority of gappers pass, swaggering back into normal life with grins wider than the Grand Canyon, stories taller than the Burj Khalifa and insights deeper than the Mariana Trench.

As with any test, though, the more preparation you do, the more likely you are to ace it, which is why we’re incredibly excited to announce the launch of the Travel Preparation Course, which has been designed by none other than Bear Grylls.

The new course is part of the Bear Grylls Survival Academy

You’ve probably heard of Bear – his survival programs alone have a global audience of 1.2 billion – but for those of you who haven’t, he’s a bit of a legend. He’s served in the SAS. He broke his back in three place, recovered, and then summited Everest. He’s rowed naked in a bath tub for 22 miles along the Thames. He’s eaten some of the most gruesome critters this planet has on offer, typically grimacing in surprised disgust and attempting to describe the evil flavour that’s infiltrated his gob before mumbling something about protein. It’s all highly entertaining. But we digress.

The course, which is specifically targeted at gappers, will be run by his elite team of highly trained experts, some of whom have worked directly with him on some of his upcoming TV series. The aim is to prepare travellers for potentially adverse or hostile environments, as well as teaching more general skills like budgeting, security and cultural awareness.

Participants will be taught lifesaving techniques which cover everything from employing wilderness first aid to dealing with kidnap and hostage situations to surviving natural disasters. The day will be divided between the classroom and exciting outdoor terrain, including forests, rivers and hills.

Speaking about the new course, Bear said: “This is a powerful way of encouraging people to learn skills that, when they are out their comfort zone, could ultimately save their life. The course builds character and instils a positive ‘can do’ attitude whilst providing the confidence and knowledge to stay alive whatever the arena.”

The groups will be limited to 20 people and the locations will vary across the UK. The course will run from 10am to 4pm and cost £150.
