Spike Aerospace S-512 Supersonic Jet will cut journey time in half
A new jet is promising to slice journey times between New York and London to just three hours.
Spike Aerospace claims its upcoming dual-engine S-512 Supersonic Jet will fly 450mph (724km/h) faster than any other civilian jet, effectively cutting transatlantic trips in half.
As well as being incredibly quick, the jet will also be luxurious, sporting a lushly appointed cabin that will be able to accommodate up to 18 passengers. The Multiplex Digital cabin will feature large screens instead of the usual windows, which can display entertainment or a view of outside the plane, if you’re feeling brave.
The S-512 concept was first revealed in 2013, and it’s come a long way since that first showing. “The past 18 months have resulted in significant improvements in all three factors and in a few additional areas like sonic boom, range and comfort,” says a post on Spike’s website. We’ll take their word for it.
All of this doesn’t come cheap, of course. A finished S-512 is expected to cost between $60 million and $80 million and, given that they can only hold 18 passengers at a time, tickets are unlikely to be cheap. If you don’t want to use up your entire travel budget in one journey, you might need to stick to the familiar 7-hour cattle class journey.
It’ll still totally be worth it.
