The Queen's travel tips

If you're going to get advice from the Queen, you're probably going to take it. In fact, there aren't many people who have travelled as much as her. If she was a member of the gapyear.com message boards (and she might be), she'd be an uber gapper. Anyway, she's given some top travel tips on how to stay healthy while travelling.

Apparently, never eat salads, shellfish or watermelon. Those are her tips after travelling to some of the most far-flung places over the last 60 years.

Parliament's 'Father of the House' Sir Peter Tapsell once asked a royal courtier how the Queen managed to cope with the demands of travelling. According to the Daily Mail, Sir Peter said: "The bedrock of her (the Queen's) success has been the constitution. Not our constitution but hers because she has always had the most astonishing stamina.

"In 1953, accompanied as always by the indomitable Duke of Edinburgh, she travelled 53,000 miles. In 1977, the year of her Silver Jubilee, she travelled 56,000 miles.

"I once asked a courtier how she did it. To which I received the characteristic reply: ‘By not eating salads, shellfish and watermelon while travelling'."

2012 is of the course the year of her Diamond Jubilee (60 years on the throne) and it is just one of the reasons to travel in the UK this year.

What are some of your travel tips for staying healthy on your gap year? Any shared secrets?

Also, if you want some advice and information on how to avoid one of the most common gap year illnesses, traveller' diarrhoea, then read our advice guide.
