There’s a $400,000-a-year job vacancy in New Zealand – and nobody wants it

Small town Tokoroa needs a doctor

Backpackers are always looking for the perfect job abroad, a cushy role that allows them to earn some decent pocket money while they see the wonders of the world.

Well, how does a salary of $400,000 to live in beautiful New Zealand sound? The only catch is that you have to be a doctor, and willing to live in the rural town of Tokoroa. So far, nobody has accepted the role.

Dr Alan Kenny, co-owner of Tokoroa Family Health clinic, is desperate for a new GP to join him, but despite the inflated salary on offer not a single person has applied in four months. The job doesn’t just come with a huge pay packet – there would also be no weekend or night duties, and the GP would co-own the clinic.

The total lack of candidates has left Dr. Kenny having to deal with 6,000 patients all by himself. Tokoroa is in the Waikato region of New Zealand’s North Island – also home to Auckland, Wellington, and a host of popular visitor’s spots – but Dr. Kenny believes the town’s diminutive size means young people simply don’t want to move there, regardless of the pay on offer.

So, could this be the perfect gap year job for you? Well, let’s break it down. Firstly, you need to be a doctor. That requires a 5-year degree, 2 foundation years, and then 3 years vocational training. A good medical degree is likely to cost you £9000 per year, totalling £45,000, or NZ$94,000. Even when you add on a little more for your flight out there, you’d still recoup your expenditure within about 3 months.

Sounds like it’s worth a punt to us. Of course, by the time you’re qualified, someone might have taken the job already.  But at least you’ll be able to write your own prescriptions.
