Hey mate,
The Anne Frank mesume is really interesting, as is the sex museum (probably best not to see them one after the other – that might be a little weird).
Amsterdam is a cool city to kick back and relax in; it’s really cool for wandering around too.
The Flying Pig always gets good reviews as a backpackers hostel. St Christopher’s Inn too.
Check out some on HostelBookers – http://www.hostelbookers.com/results/loc/dd/dst/1039/arr/2013-04-17/ngt/2/ppl/1/#/hos=true/hot=true/apt=true/cam=true/gue=true

I’d second the Anne Frank Museum, but make sure you book in advance… we made the mistake of just turning up and queuing for almost 2 hours in the freezing cold!!
I thought the Heineken museum was pretty cool (if a bit gimmicky), also if you can, go to a comedy club called Boom Chicago…

It’s one of the funniest and best live comedy shows I’ve seen, a little like “Who’s line is it anyway”… highly recommended!
Thanks Rob

The cheapest deal is Bob’s Youth Hostel. It was 18 euros including breakfast last time I stayed 2 years ago. It’s really close to Centraal Station.
It’s basic but it’s fine.
Check out the space cakes but watch out for bikes 🙂

I’ve stayed at Flying pig downtown twice- first time was about….god I can’t remember, maybe around 7 years ago?(shit I can’t believe that!!) Back then it was great value, decent breakfast in this sort of basement area, and a good social vibe. The location is spot on but i’m sure there’s plenty more out there.
Yup, Anne Frank is interesting but pre-book online or you’ll waste a day queueing.
Heineken is a gimmick, still a laugh though if you want to go.
My sister and I did some sort of boat tour that left from the centre of town near the train station. Took an hour or two and from memory was pleasant.
The Sex museum was cheap back then and was hilarious. Plus I think it’s open until like midnight so you could do it in the evening before or after dinner & drinks etc, freeing up time in the day for other stuff.
There were other things like markets and cool cafes but I just can’t remember details, sorry.
I know there’s a huge coffee shop with pool tables across from flying pig that was cool.

I stayed at the flying pig in Amsterdam late last year, good hostel, good location :). Can’t say much better than that!
For the Anne Frank museum we got there just as it was opening and got in pretty much straight away. When we left an hour or so later a massive queue had appeared so go first thing in the morning!
The sex museum is hilariously dodgy! I also went to the Medieval Torture museum which was very interesting. We found a museum just off the main high street which was about the history of Amsterdam which was interesting, and the Riksmuseum (sp?) which was good.

I have just returned from Amsterdam today. Stayed at the flying pig downtown, great location and good bar. They have free ear plugs and a resident cat!
The Riksmuseum has just reopened following its refurbishment. I didn’t visit but could be interesting.
The red light district and sex museum are a good laugh and be sure to try some hole in the wall frites with mayonnaise. The cheese shops with tasters are great… I came home with about 2kg of cheese in all different flavours.
