Southeast Asia 2017 - Travelling as a couple

Hi all!

I’m completely new to this blog but have seen some decent advice so thought I’d join up and fire some questions at those who are able to help.

So my girlfriend and I planning to go travelling in Southeast Asia in January 2017. We are looking to go for 4 months to include Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Indonesia. We haven’t booked anything up yet but are very close to booking flights and finally committing ourselves to the adventure. Before we do so, we really need some advice mainly on budget.

Obviously we shall be travelling as couple, therefore, will be hoping to save a little bit of money on sharing a private room. The standard of accommodation we are looking to stay in would ideally be a private room with fan (and the very occasional a/c room and slightly more luxurious hotel once in a while). We’re not looking to ‘slum it’ nor are we looking to sleep in luxury so I would like to say the ‘average’ backpackers expectation.

We shall be looking to make the most of the trip so will definitely be doing lots of museums and typical attractions. I would also like to learn to scuba dive too but this would probably be the most extravagant thing i’d be looking to do.

So really my question is, what would you expect a four month trip to cost based on the fact that we are travelling as a couple? I’m ideally looking for an average figure that is inclusive of all of the day to day expenses including activities and visa’s etc. I guess this is the golden question and will ultimately decide how long we travel for etc.

Thanks in advance! grin

I’d say £7,000 between you to be safe smile That’ll allow you to treat yourselves sometimes, but not have to worry about running out of money.
If you want to learn to dive Borneo and Koh Tao are cheapest, and I’d recommend Simple life if you’re going to Koh Tao.

Thanks for this. Out of curiosity, what makes up that figure? Does that include flights there or is that £7000 once we’re there? Could you possibly give me an average for each day? From what research I’ve done so far, £35 a day seems to keep rearing its head, is this accurate?

As for diving, do you know roughly how much this costs? And is the experience in these particular areas worth it I.e the fish and other wildlife seen?

Thanks for your help!

Hey I think you need to take 7000 as a guide as it really depends what you are like as a couple

I have not travelled all the places on your list but I did spend a month in Thailand on my first visit and 2 and a half weeks on my second.

tours will really bump up your price and I think my diving course was around 190 pounds for my open water and then roughly the same again for doing my advanced open water.

Drinking also will up your budget I found I could easily spend what I would on a night out at home if you prefer spirits over beer.

so when planning a trip think about the places you want to go, the food you plan to eat and the must see tours you really want to visit.

7000 should be fine but it is dependant on what you as a couple are like.

Is that £7000 between us I assume? And I also assume that won’t include flights and insurance etc? Fortunately neither of us drink alcohol really, never been a fan of it which may do is a few favours!

Yes between you, not including the flight there but including all travel there. This is based on my three trips to SEA and my friends trips, plus many other posts here I’ve read! Obviously lifestyle varies the price, but generally just under 1000 a month will be enough.
Open water diving course should cost around $250 I think, I know koh Tao and scuba junkie in Borneo are the cheapest places. They’re both worth it in terms of what you’ll see, reefs teeming with fish, eels, nudibranch etc. Borneo is better, at mabul/semporna, but koh Tao is cheaper to get to if you’re already in Thailand. Many dive schools are party focused, sometimes leading to dangerously diving hungover/still under the influence, but simple life are really good and professionalsmile

This sounds wicked! I’ll have a look up on Simple Life, sounds ideal for what I want. Do you think 4 months is long enough for what we want to do? Thanks for your help!
