Im 27 now and in a fairly stable job. I enjoy my work but I am a bit bored in general. Ive always wanted to travel and always thought Id end up doing something like BUNAC at some point but seemed to have had to put it off for one reason or another. Im now thinking about jackin in my job to go to Canada for a year (Ive been before, for a month when I was a student and loved it) - just wondering if theres anyone else out there thats done that or anyone in the same kind of age group who’s doing/thinking of doing BUNAC? Im worried Im a bit old to be doing that kinda trip now…....eeeeek!
Don’t worry when I did Canada the first time round I was with people in their late 20s, one guy was 30. I’m planning on doing my 2nd visa in 2013, by which time I will be 28!
Generally i find most long term travellers these days to be mid-20s.
Definitely do Canada if you can; in 2007 I had the time of my life out there.
Hi starssparkle84. Ive just turned 27 to mu dislike but im like you wanting a cahnge but thinking am i too late for it all. Im thinking of doing till xmas in my job, wanted to go end of summer but not prepared enough but need to go before im 28. What will you be doing in canada? want to go there but not really thought about it. x
I have been thinking the same thing! Pleased i just stumbled upon here.. I am also in late twenties (29-Eeeek!!!) and have been thinking about living in canada for a good few years now. Feel the time has finally come! Although i am slightly nervous about doing it on my tod. eek.
I have paid for my visa already, just going through the whole paper work process now… Hows your decisions coming along? have you applied already?
Good Luck! Go for it i say!
If you want to get in touch about anything or just general canada chats that would be rad
I did BUNAC Work Canada last year and absolutely loved it. I’m 25 now, and i’m heading back on a new visa later this year (prob. September time). When I was there first time around there were loads of people in the mid-late 20’s working and travelling on visas, probably more than there were people in their late teens. You should definitely do it whilst you have the opportunity. I went over on my own and found it really easy to find work and make new friends. All the English friends I made whilst I was there are now desperate to go back, and they are all a similar age.
I am 29, hit the big 3oooo at the end of May! I am seriously considering going through BUNAC for a WHV. Being at the top end of the age range doesn’t worry me too much. I have been to Canada twice and loved it, want to go back and work in the Rockies for a year.
Hi, seriously dont worry about your age, I did a year round OZ when I was 25 and met loads of people the same age or older. I was suprised how few 18 years olds I actually met I thought I was well passed it.
I am now 27 and trying to get a visa sorted to do canada for a year. If you want to do it just go for it, it will be something you will never regret! but you may regret not going for it.
Good luck with your travelsx
yes!! im not the only one then, im 28 now and will be near enough 29 when i go away again, definately want to fit in a working visa before the big 30 cut off point! wasn’t too fussed about getting back to oz but would love to do a whv in canada, how’s everyone goin about it? seen on bunac their allocations all used up but can apply direct. any advice would be great? x
I’m 27 and getting ready to do the working holiday in Oz!! My friend just got back from NZ and she was 26 when she did it. I don’t think age matters! Just have fun Does anybody have a review of BUNAC?? I can’t decide if I should go through them or just on my own. I already have my 1 years visa for Oz. Good luck in Canada!!
I turned 31 last month and am planning on leaving for Canada in November on the WHV…. snuck in just before my deadline!
I’m not going through BUNAC and have gone directly with the Embassy… worked out cheaper cos you don’t pay BUNAC fees but then you don’t get their services either.
Remember, you only need to APPLY while you are still 30, so that includes the up to the day before your 31st birthday. You then have a year to activate the visa, essentially taking you up to 32nd birthday.
Thanks for the info, was wonderin bout the age thing! Just gotta work out if oz and nz have the same rules too so can squeeze in as many as poss! Have a great time over there x
That is certainly the same for Oz, I know cos I applied 2 days before I turned 31 Remember, Oz is approx 10 hours ahead so you need to apply before you turn 31 there
Same rules, you have a year from the visa being granted to get into the country. If you want to do a 2nd WHV then you need to get that one in before you turn 31 too… So you would need to get into Oz before you turned 30 and do the 3 months compulsory rural farm work thing.
As for NZ, if I remember correct then you can apply for NZ WHV up to 35 years old so you have a few more years to get that one in too
My plans are kinda the same as you, think I left it far too close to the limit though! If I like anywhere enough then I think I will stay there (I don’t think it will be an issue for me to get work sponsorship due to the line of work I’m in)
So ur plannin on working in canada and oz before u hit 32??
Good tip about the time difference!!
Think theres 2 types for nz, the one u can have up to 35 is called something different and u can only have it for a yr, no extending it for the 2nd yr like whv but should be enough to get ut all out my system!! Was it quite easy to apply thru the embassy? Think i’d prefer to save my money and do it that way but applications are closed at the mo i think
Thanks for all the replies folks - really encouraging to know there’s a lot of people out there my age. I still havent applied and will be 2012 before I do now as think I would go through BUNAC and their allocation is up for the year….Im still going back & forth on the decision but I keep coming back to it even when I change my mind. I’ve been saving up loads (supposedly to move into my own place after the new year) but Im really tempted to use it just to go, why it is such a scary decision???! Ahhhhhh! xx
@Abbyb46: Only just saw your reply! Yes, basically I need to be in Oz before 32nd birthday, but that only gives me about 8.5 months in Canada max. IF i really enjoy it in Canada then I will just stay there hopefully, will need to sort out job sponsorship. Otherwise onwards to Oz. I have enough points to be able to apply for permanent residency in Oz right now if I want to, but I have never been and figured the WHV is a good way of scoping that place out, warts and all!
Applying through the embassy was very simple and requires the same paperwork as Bunac. Just go online, register, download the forms, fill them in and send it off. They then email saying you need to deposit payment and it then goes through secondary processing. I got mine within 5-6 weeks of applying.
There’s 2 things which you will need. A Police Certificate showing you have no criminal record (real simple, cost about £30) and a form signed/stamped by your bank saying you have £1950 in your account. This was tricky since my bank (HSBC) did not want to sign it and loads of people having issues with this. Hopefully they’ll change it next year so you can just send in 3 months bank statements or something, but you’ll need to run around a few banks and branches or possibly open a bank account with a friendlier bank!!!
@Starsparkle84,: Just use the money and GO! You can get your own place in Canada
Beware of BUNAC - this company is completely useless and people thinking of booking their “experience of a lifetime” through them should be very cautious and consider other options. I was under the impression that they were a necessary requirement to travel and work in Canada. This is FALSE. All this company offers for the grand price of £359 is exactly what Craigslist offers for free. When I paid the money I was lead to believe that I was guaranteed a visa because they make it seem like they have a special relationship with Canadian Immigration, they don’t. So, when I did a bit of research and realised I could do everything myself very easily, i asked for my money back (excluding the initial £50 deposit). I was told I was only entitled to £129 of £359! This was before they had even done anything, thus they can’t have spent any of the money. If you ask me this is criminal, and is no better than a bottom of the pile internet scam. If I can offer any advise it is DON’T use BUNAC for your holiday, the services they provide are not nearly worth the price tag they give them. If you do need help applying for a work visa in Canada, ask me, and I’ll send you one e-mail with everything you need to know for free. Save yourself £359, it’s a lot of money. Happy travels
