Things to Do in Brazil
A lifetime could be spent experiencing Brazil’s attractions: the country is huge and there is a bewildering amount to see and do. Alas, most travellers can’t spend the entirety of their lives here, so we’ve plucked out the very best of the best.
Explore Rio de Janeiro
The attractions in Rio are numerous, but some of the unmissables include visiting Christ the Redeemer (pictured) on Corcovado Mountain, catching some rays on Copacabana Beach and riding the cable car to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain.
Visit Iguazu Falls
These ferocious cascades are located on the border with Argentina and were recently announced as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. The falls are divided into an upper tier and lower tier, and dump three tons of water a second.
Cruise the Amazon River
The Amazon Jungle covers more than half of Brazil and is an absolute must see, particularly via the mighty Amazon River, the second longest in the world. Manaus, one of the few cities close to the jungle, is the best place to depart for treks and tours.
Check out Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park
This UNESCO-listed, breathtakingly scenic national park is located in the centre of Brazil in the state of Goias. The dramatic plateaux on which it sits is one of the oldest rock formations in the world; about 1.8 billion years. It has an extraordinarily rich biodiversity: over half of the world’s species of flora and fauna lives here.
Party in Salvador da Bahia
Rio may be Carnival capital of the world, but the city of Salvador da Bahia is easily the best for year-round revelling, with its countless street parties and buzzing atmosphere. History buffs will also get their fill: this was the first colonial capital of Brazil and is one of the oldest cities in the Americas.
Chill out in Paraty
This charmingly laidback and picturesque colonial town is perfect for a spot of relaxation. Located just over 120km from Rio, the town, which has a population of just 36,000, is backed with spectacular mountain and rainforest scenery and fronted with the azure expanse of the Atlantic.
