Situated in central Europe, you'll be excused for not knowing much about this country. However, there's tonnes to see and do here and it's the perfect place to explore on a gap year.

Since joining the European Union in 2007, Bulgaria has undergone development and it's going from strength to strength. The main cities have become vibrant and attractive with an absolute killer nightlife.

Bulgaria's main lure for backpackers and travellers is its stunning beaches and picturesque bays. However, there are also networks of hiking trails allowing you to discover the country's lush mountains and forested landscapes, especially around the Rila and Pirin Mountains.

The cities too have much to offer with the cosmopolitan Sofia with its lovely parks and fascinating museums, and Plovdiv with its Roman ruins and National Revival architectural treasures and Varna with its youthful maritime energy. All you need to do is get yourself there.
