  • Maple Syrup

  • Buttertarts (tarts made with butter, sugar and eggs)

Some of these foods, like the beaver tails and fiddleheads, will only be found at the Eastern and Western edges of Canada.

Local game meat like caribou, venison, moose, grouse or wild turkey is popular in Canada, and comes in a variety of ways. Splash the cash in a fancy restaurant to sample the best. Seafood is also very popular in Canada – the oysters, mussels and squid are among the best you’ll ever taste.

French-Canadian cuisine

Popular dishes in the French regions of Montreal and Quebec include specialties such as:

  • Tourtière – an old-recipe meat pie dish
  • Cipaille - meat and vegetable pie
  • Cretons - mince of pork drippings
  • Ragoût de pattes - pigs' feet stew)
  • Plorine - pork pie
  • Oreilles de Christ - fried larding bacon
  • Poutine - French fries, cheese curds and gravy (popular everywhere!)
  • Croquignoles - home-made doughnuts cooked in shortening.

Chinese cuisine is also a popular food in Canada, as is Jewish. Out in the sticks you’ll find the popular Ukranian dish of perogis – introduced by the large number of immigrants.  Thanks to the proximity to the sea sushi is standard fare and great value for anyone going to Canada on their gap year.

Don’t leave Canada without stashing some of the maple syrup toffees in your hand luggage – they’re pretty much as good as life gets. Feel free to send some in to the gapyear.com office too.
