Backpacking in Ethiopia on a Gap Year

Countries  »  Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a unique country with ancient history and diverse landscapes that set it apart from every other destination. It is perfect for backpackers in search of something a bit different on their gap year. Human bones found here suggest that our earliest ancestors were walking the plains of Ethiopia 3.2 million years ago, and it is believed to have been the place where mankind originated.

Ethiopia isn't just about natural history, though. It also has lots of biblical ties. In fact, it is the second oldest official Christian nation in the world after Armenia. It is speculated that this historic country was once home to the Queen of Sheba, who is mentioned in the Bible. Because of this, Ethiopia has become a centre of pilgrimages for religious followers who aren't shy to party when festival season rolls around.

Ethiopia often finds it hard to escape from the stigmas which surround it. But with so much on offer there is no reason why it shouldn't be the next up and coming backpacker destination.
